What Cherished Canvas is

We scan online marketplaces for paintings, score each one against a set of value signals — apparent age, frame quality, signature, provenance wording, size and others — and show you the ones that look most promising. That is the whole service: a way to find things worth a second look.

We do not sell paintings. We are not a marketplace, an auction house, a dealer or an agent for any seller. Every listing you see belongs to someone else on someone else's platform.

The Scout score is not a valuation

This is the most important thing on this page. The Scout score is an automated opinion produced by software from a photograph and a seller's description. It is not:

• a valuation, appraisal or estimate of what a painting is worth;
• an authentication, or any statement about who painted something;
• a condition report;
• a prediction that a painting will sell, resell or appreciate;
• investment advice of any kind.

It is a shortlisting aid and nothing more. Software cannot tell an original from a good print in a photograph, and neither the score nor anything else on this site is a substitute for seeing a painting in person or getting a professional valuation, authentication or condition report before you spend money. Any decision to buy is yours, at your own risk.

Listing details — prices, descriptions, photographs, availability — come from the marketplaces and can be wrong, out of date or removed at any moment. We do not verify them.

Buying happens somewhere else

When you click through to a listing you leave this site. Any purchase is a contract between you and that seller, under that marketplace's terms, with that marketplace's protections and dispute process. We are not a party to it. Questions about payment, postage, returns, damage or authenticity go to the seller or the marketplace, not to us.

Affiliate links

Some links to marketplaces are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission when you buy through one. It never costs you more, and commission plays no part in how paintings are scored or ranked. See the affiliate disclosure for the detail.

Your account

You need a working email address to sign in. Keep your sign-in link and your account to yourself — anyone with access to your email can get into your account. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has. You must be 18 or over to create an account.

You can close your account at any time by asking us. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or where we must for legal reasons.

Fair use of the site

Please do not:

• scrape, crawl or bulk-download listings, scores or any other content, or use automated tools to hammer the site;
• resell, republish or redistribute our scores, rankings or collections as your own product;
• try to break, overload or get around the security of the site or the accounts on it;
• submit anything unlawful, abusive or deliberately misleading through the contact form, support chat or list names;
• use the site to infringe anyone's rights or break the law.

Search engines and AI crawlers indexing public pages in the ordinary way are welcome, within our robots.txt.

Who owns what

The site itself — the design, the wording, the scoring system and the scores it produces — belongs to us. You may use it for your own painting-hunting, but not copy it into a competing service.

Listing photographs, titles and descriptions belong to the sellers and marketplaces they came from, and are shown here to help you find things, with a link to the source. If you own material shown here and want it taken down, email [email protected] with a link and we will remove it promptly.

Availability, and this being an early service

Cherished Canvas is new and still being built. Features may change, break or be withdrawn, and the site may be unavailable for maintenance or for reasons outside our control. We do not promise uninterrupted service, that any particular find will appear, or that alerts will always arrive on time — marketplaces change their systems and things move fast at the good end of the market.

The service is free at the moment. If we introduce paid plans we will set out the price and terms before you are asked to pay, and your existing rights as a consumer will apply, including the usual 14-day right to cancel a subscription bought online.

Our responsibility to you

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything here.

Beyond that: we provide the site as it is, and we are not liable for what you decide to buy. In particular we are not responsible for the price you pay, a painting turning out to be worth less than you hoped, a print sold as an original, a seller behaving badly, a listing ending before you reach it, or any lost profit or lost opportunity. Where we are liable, our total liability to you is limited to £100, or to what you have paid us in the previous twelve months if that is more.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service develops. The date at the top shows the current version, and we will tell account holders directly about significant changes before they take effect. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the new terms.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the UK you keep the right to bring proceedings in your local courts.

If something goes wrong, please contact us first — most things are quickest to sort out directly.
